Believe in Your Dreams

“Reach high, for stars lie hidden in you. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.”

~ Rabindranath Tagore

At the beginning of every new year, I like to take time to think about and write down my dreams. I’ve been practicing mindful awareness for more than twenty years, and it has been instrumental in guiding my steps forward on the path that is right for me. Each year I identify goals based on the learning and wisdom I gained from the year before. For the month of January, I’m sharing my process with you, dear reader. I hope the suggestions stimulate your curiosity. I encourage you to reach higher than ever before, to have faith in your dreams, and to put them into action.

This year I’ve chosen two projects to support my dream-building process. The first is a letter to myself, an idea taken from Canadian poet Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey Agenda. She encourages readers to write a letter to their future self that includes what they hope to accomplish, then fold it and tuck it away to review at the end of the year. When I read last year’s letter just a few days ago, my first reaction was disappointment in all the things that didn’t come to pass, but then I shifted my perspective, to notice the progress I made, and it was significant.

When I write my letter this year, I’m still going to dream big and bold, even if my goals are a little unrealistic. I’d rather reach for the stars and fall short than settle for less. I’m going to keep listening to the whispers from my heart because I know they come from the Divine. I’m heeding the voices in my head too; after all, I believe that the intersection between our minds and our hearts is where the greatest power is released.

The second activity I’m using to explore my dreams is a vision board. I started making vision boards back in 2007 after reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. I find attuning to the law of attraction and creating a visual composition inspiring. I start by listing the things I am most grateful for. Then I envision my dream life. Rupi includes making a vision board in her agenda too. It’s an opportunity to identify and then manifest what really matters to you.

This year my categories are spirituality, relationships, career, travel, health, and leisure. Mister is working with me to make a team vision board that encapsulates our mutual dreams and goals. It’s a beautiful way to connect in conversation and align our ideas and efforts. We decided to start with relationships, and it’s been fun going through our photos to find favourite images of the people who form our inner circle of trust. The next step will be to purchase a stack of glossy magazines and find images for the other categories to cut and paste onto our vision board.

Our goal is to have a finished poster board by the end of January that we’ll hang on the wall in our office where we’ll see it every day. Whatever path you choose to kindle your dreams; I hope you will reach high and go deep. My wish is for 2025 to be fueled by a positive mindset that, combined with your faith, will grow the seeds of your dreams into reality.
