Seasons of Uncertainty

“Looking deeper, we could say that the real cause of suffering is not being able to tolerate uncertainty—and thinking that it’s perfectly sane, perfectly normal, to deny the fundamental groundlessness of being human.” — Pema Chödrön

It may seem astounding, dear reader, that at age fifty-eight I can still be surprised and thrown off course, unable to tolerate life’s seasons of uncertainty. I do my best to live by the words of wisdom I expressed back in 2021 in my first novel, The Healing: to endure to the lows and enjoy the highs. But I still struggle sometimes to accept the fundamental groundlessness of being human, especially when I’m hurting deeply. Still, I’m learning. To be less reactive and more responsive, to regulate my emotions and recover more quickly.

As my awareness grows, I recognize that my ability to tolerate and endure the seasons of uncertainty is through my spiritual foundation. So many people look to the world to find their sense of purpose, rootedness, and belonging. I used to. But in my experience, trying to discover peace through acceptance by other people, material acquisitions or career success doesn’t stick. A career change or a move might provide temporary relief from the feeling of groundlessness, until another season of uncertainty comes along, and it all falls apart again.

For me, what has proved steadfast in its power to keep me grounded has been my relationship with God. I recognize that for some of my readers, the word God doesn’t resonate, and for some it even triggers unpleasant associations. I believe that the spiritual path is a deeply personal one. So please, don’t be put off the message by my chosen name for Creator. Connect to Divine Consciousness by whatever path you choose. The important thing is to know it is an inward journey to find your ability to rise up and discover your strength and ability to overcome.

I’ve been living in a season of uncertainty for some time now; of vast changes and transformations. There have been pockets of light and dark interspersed throughout this long season of transition, but mostly it has been a ripe time for reflection, expansion, and growth. It calls me to keep moving deeper into my spirituality. I am in awe of how God continues to move mountains to bring miracles into my life, again and again. Whenever I feel the weight of the uncertainty, I relax into the awareness that I am held. I am grounded in spirit.

I encourage you, dear reader, to take the opportunity of this coming change of season, from the sunny warm energy of summer that fuels us to action to the cooler, cloudy dynamic of fall that calls us to reflect. Take time to be still and go inward. Listen to your heart whispering, all is well.
