A Beautiful World
“With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.” ~Max Ehrmann, Desiderata (1927)
Today’s blog is inspired by words of wisdom expressed in Desiderata, written by Max Ehrmann in 1927. In an ever-changing, sometimes challenging, and uncertain world, the timelessness of his musings brought me comfort. I wish the same for you, dear reader.
“Remember what peace there may be in silence.” In stillness, there is no judgment. No swirling, twirling thoughts. No pressing, stressful actions. In silence, there is an opportunity to feel our connection to all that is, and was, and ever will be.
“Be on good terms with all persons.” It doesn’t mean you will always get along or agree with everyone. But you can be on good terms. You can agree to disagree. To live and let live.
“Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others.” Sounds simple enough, but for me, it isn’t easy. I lean towards speaking loudly. In challenging circumstances, my communication is often misunderstood. When enthusiastic, I can get lost inside that, and not make space to listen.
“Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.” Many of us have been taught to belittle our achievements. Wouldn’t want to appear vain. And an unhealthy need to feel in control can lead to excessive plans. There is a Goldilocks space of balance, that requires presence.
“Take kindly the counsel of the years.” In my experience, many of us struggle to take advice kindly. From the years, and even more so, from our elders. If we let go of our defenses and receive wisdom with gratitude, there is an opportunity to expand our awareness.
“Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.” I’ve been listening to podcasts and reading about the value of guarding your spirit. But it is when I put the concept into practice that I truly understand the gift of a strong spiritual foundation.
“Be gentle with yourself.” All human beings are imperfect and prone to making mistakes. It’s how we’re wired to learn. Too often, we beat ourselves up for what is only our nature. It is possible to be compassionate as you strive to become your best.
“No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.” I love how this wisdom pushes us to acknowledge, with humility, our human limitations. We imagine we could devise a better world than the one that exists. In truth, we are but grains of sand. It really is a beautiful world.
