My Body, My Right

Motherhood is too important, too all consuming, to be done well unless it’s undertaken by choice. Isn’t it?” ~ Barbara Kingsolver

The slogan for International Women’s Day 2024 is my body, my right. The goal is to invest in women to accelerate progress. Despite significant progress over the years, the ongoing struggle for gender equality is real. Since Roe was overturned in June 2022, fourteen states in the USA have made abortion illegal.

Barbara Kingsolver, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Demon Copperhead, advocates for the right of women to choose abortion. We need more people of influence to speak up. These laws further traumatize women who are victims of rape. There are many other untenable consequences of forced pregnancy. Economic stress and hardship. Health risks to the mother and child. A child born, unwanted.

Is it fair or reasonable for anyone who doesn’t have to carry the burden of an unwanted pregnancy to make the choice for someone else? How can we justify putting the rights of an unborn fetus over the rights of a woman – or a girl? How can we call a society free and equal while denying one gender the same rights of another? What consequences does the man bear?

We condemn a hen for abandoning her chick, then turn around and eat her without blinking an eye. We judge a woman for having an abortion, then bomb an entire village of men, women, and children—an accepted consequence of warfare. Some people believe their values are superior. That they know better. Can a judge know the right choice for a woman to make about her own body? Autonomy over your own body is a fundamental human right. My body, my right.
