Not Broken

“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” – Maya Angelou

I believe that the mistakes and hardships we endure don’t have to turn us into victims of circumstance. In fact, I feel the opposite—we have a choice as to how we respond to life, challenges and all. Whatever happens during our experience as human beings, the light inside us is never damaged or dimmed. It is Divine, whole and complete. Not broken.

My studies of spirituality have led me on a dynamic journey. I’ve learned from spiritual teachers of different faiths and belief systems. From historical figures like Jesus and Buddha to modern day thinkers like Louise Hay, Eckhart Tolle, and Joel Osteen. They have varied interpretations, but they all seem to point in the same direction. The Universal Intelligence doesn’t make mistakes. God, the source of all life, is the light that lives inside each and every one of us.

Our most painful experiences have a purpose in the bigger picture of consciousness awakening. From the natural world of our physical bodies, minds and feelings, the injustices and wrong-doings feel intolerable. And they are, on the level of our humanity. In the dimension of our being, all things contribute to the evolution of the whole. Suffering expands our awareness and has the power to strengthen our spiritual faith—if we choose to receive it.

Each of us has a unique destiny to fulfill that requires the gifts, talents and strengths that are distinctively ours. When we allow ourselves to relax into that and trust life, especially in the hardest, most challenging times, we rise above hardship. Each of us is one of a kind, fully equipped to live the life we were born into with grace and integrity. We are stronger than we think when we embrace the light that is in us and let it shine.

If you’re carrying the burden of a label like Damaged Goods or Victim, I challenge you to set it down and reclaim your birthright as a Victor, Champion, and Leader. Don’t listen to the lies of darkness that whisper you are unworthy. Don’t compare yourself to others, who may seem to have less disadvantages or more gifts.

Einstein’s teacher told his father he’d never amount to anything. But he refused to accept that label and look what he achieved. Bumblebees defy the laws of aerodynamics, able to fly despite their bodies being too big for their wings. Just as a butterfly can cause an earthquake, your life has meaning in more ways than you can ever fully realize. You are not broken.

If there is anything from the past that is a stronghold of despair keeping you from being your best, I urge you to lay it down. Don’t let what people speak over you keep you from being your best. Don’t let circumstances of pain and hardship break your spirit. Close your eyes. Breathe. Look inward and remember the light that is you. Behold the beauty of your creation with awe. Believe in yourself, a child of the most-high, all powerful One.
