Gentle Encouragement

“Gentle words cause life and health; griping brings discouragement.” ~ Proverbs.

Our words are powerful. We need to train our minds to choose gentle words of encouragement. We must do this as soon as a thought bubbles up, especially before speaking. My son once said, “If we all just took a moment to consider our words before speaking, we would communicate more respectfully and have healthier relationships.”

When I was young, my parents often said, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” It’s a simple directive but hard to do. So often, we blurt out unkind or negative observations without considering the consequences. We not only criticize other people; we gripe about our own lives. People who constantly complain are a drain.

Mister and I started following Joel Osteen’s podcast last August. He’s a pastor of a large church in Texas and one of the most positive, motivational speakers I’ve ever listened to. One of our favourite episodes is Be Positive or Be Quiet. It’s the same message with a fresh perspective.

The other day, I was at the insurance brokerage to renew a policy. The agent’s stylish choice of clothing and accessories was very striking, and instead of just thinking about it, I shared the compliment with her. She smiled broadly and said I made her day. It didn’t take any effort, but it was clear my words were powerful by the expression on her face.

Why not choose to be a blessing instead of a burden? When you focus your attention on your strengths, they multiply. When you are generous with your compliments, you create an opportunity to brighten someone else’s day.
