Everything is Connected
“Until the “separation,” which is the meaning of the “fall,” nothing was lacking. A sense of separation from God is the only lack you really need to correct. ~ A Course in Miracles
The perspective that we are all connected resonates deeply with me. I feel it in my heart as truth. I see the perception of separation as the root of almost all conflict; past, present, and future. Human beings not only perceive themselves as separate from God but from one another and from all living things. Many are so disillusioned with the world that they’ve lost their ability to recognize a Divine Source that connects everyone and everything.
Fear not dear reader. I am not here to judge or convert anyone. I am here to spread love and acceptance. I am not interested in telling anyone what to believe. I only ask that you stay open to the idea that the perception that human beings are separate from the natural world is untrue. It has led to the destruction and desecration of our planet and to the abuse of land, animals, and even human beings that we see as different or “other” to ourselves.
In today’s world, I see these lines of division being drawn everywhere I turn. Between genders, cultures, religious and political affiliations—almost any characteristic you can name. During Covid, it was between vaccinated and non-vaccinated. Then black, white, and indigenous. Me too. Climate Change. Russia versus Ukraine. Israel versus Palestine.
At the root of all these divisions is the belief that we are separate. And of course, in the physical world of our bodies, minds, and personalities, we are. We don’t have to choose between these two polarities. We can be unique individuals and also a part of the collective known as Beings. We can exist in peace and harmony.
In her Ted Talk, Why Thinking About Death Has You Live a Better Life, Alua Arthur discusses how to live with grace by examining what matters to you the most. I was struck by her compelling description of how she chooses to imagine life after death. Instead of the language I use, of spirit returning to God, she described a cosmic collective where her essence joined the energies of all living things in a swirling, twirling, messy dance of molecules.
In her book, If Women Rose Rooted, Sharon Blackie writes in the story of the voices of the wells, “It’s a contract you see, people and the land. You care for it, and it cares for you… the sacred contract which maintains the balance of the world.” Yet since the Industrial Revolution, and perhaps before, humans have seen it as their right to violate, take, hoard, and waste every living thing on this planet.
In his Essential Teachings podcast, The Unobserved Mind Leads to Suffering, Eckhart Tolle reminds us that since the beginning of World War I, more human beings have lost their lives at the hands of elected governments than to murder or natural disasters. People kill people for looking, being, or acting differently. He calls this insanity, and in my opinion, rightly so.
In A Course in Miracles, it is written, “Unified needs lead to unified action, because this produces a lack of conflict.”
If separation leads to division and connection creates unified action, if we get to choose our beliefs about the nature of reality and our world, what do you choose to believe? How do you choose to act?
